The picks at a glance

Which one should you buy?

• For an above ground pool replacing an old pump: A listing that states horsepower and flow, such as the XtremepowerUS 16" with 3/4 HP and 3,100 GPH, gives clear replacement figures to check against the existing setup. See pick 2
• For a pool owner who wants a variable speed motor: The Blue Wave Sandman 22-In states a variable speed pump at 1.5 HP, the only variable speed pick in this list. See pick 1
• For an above ground pool with a timer: The XtremepowerUS 13" with 3/4 HP and 2,460 GPH states a timer in its title, a detail only a few picks have. See pick 3
• For a smaller above ground pool on a budget: Bestway's 1,500 GPH sand filter pump names a pool range of 300 to 11,200 gallons, a fit for a smaller above ground pool. See pick 14

Side by side

How we picked

The pool holds 27 sand filter pump listings for above ground pools. Each is a pump and filter combo whose title names a sand filter, a sand tank or filter balls sold with the pump; a pump sold as a sand filter pump replacement is a pump alone and is not in this list. Picks are ranked first by the number of stated details (speed, horsepower, voltage, flow, pool type, filter and timer), most first. Ties are broken by speed type (variable before dual before single before not stated), then by the order the products appear in the pool file. All 15 picks are compared on the details stated in each listing title and on live prices; the page prints prices and the guide makes no price comparison in prose.

How to choose

Above ground pool type in the title

Every pick in this guide is a pump and filter combo whose title names a sand filter, a sand tank or filter balls sold with the pump. The guide focuses on listings that name an above ground pool; a few also name in-ground and above ground, and one does not state a pool type at all. Read the title for the pool type before comparing.

Single, dual or variable speed in a listing

The titles name three kinds of motor control: single speed, dual speed and variable speed. This list includes one variable speed pick and one dual speed pick; the rest do not state a speed type. The guide quotes the speed type exactly as the title states it and makes no claim about which is better for a pool.

Horsepower, flow and timer figures in a title

Some listings state a horsepower figure, some state a flow rate in GPH, and some name a timer. A pick may have all of these, only a few, or none. When a figure is absent, the seller does not state it, and this guide never guesses it. The pros and cons sections of each pick list which details are stated and which are not.

Who installs and wires pool equipment

Pool pumps are wired by a licensed electrician according to the maker's manual. The manual also covers sizing and installation. For any wiring question, follow the manual and ask the licensed electrician.

Rules to check before you buy: local code, permits and utility

Check with your local building office and your utility about local requirements before choosing a pump. Requirements can vary by area, and the guide does not state them because the catalogue has no data on permits, codes or utility programs.

What this guide leaves out (and why)

This guide does not cover energy use, operating cost, filter media, water balance or cleaning performance. The catalogue only holds what each listing title states: speed, horsepower, flow, voltage, pool type, filter and timer where present. For anything beyond that, read the maker's sizing page and manual.

Questions

What is a sand filter pump for an above ground pool?

A sand filter pump is a pump and filter combo whose title names a sand filter, a sand tank or filter balls sold with the pump. This guide covers those combos for above ground pools and excludes pumps sold as sand filter pump replacements, which are pumps alone and have no filter sold with them.

Does this guide cover energy use, operating cost, sizing or installation?

No. The catalogue holds no energy, cost, sizing or installation data. The listings state speed, horsepower, flow, voltage, pool type, filter and timer where present. For sizing and installation, read the maker's sizing page and manual, and ask a licensed electrician for wiring.

What does 'variable speed' mean in a title?

When a listing title names a variable speed pump, the motor can run at different speeds. This guide reports that detail as stated; it makes no energy or cost claims because the catalogue has no such data. Installation and wiring are decided by the maker's manual and a licensed electrician.

Why are some listings missing horsepower or flow?

A listing may not state a horsepower, flow, voltage or timer figure. In that case the detail is not stated by the seller, and this guide does not guess it. The pick's cons and skip_if sections note which details are absent so you can compare against your needs.
